23 FEB 2025 Surah Ikhlaas

Surah Ikhlaas, 23 February 2025, Ghouse Mohiuddin

Surah Ikhlaas (Sincerity or Purity)

History

Its Makki Surah revealed to prophet Mohammed (PBUH) before Hijra in response to a group of polytheists who asked Prophet PBUH to name the lineage of Allah SWT to them.

Allah SWT immediately revealed this Surah which clearly defines Allah ‘s attributes where no doubt or suspicion is left.

Theme

It clarifies Islamic belief and stresses upon monotheism.

It teaches Muslims to surrender to Allah SWT acknowledging no one has right to be worshipped but Allah SWT and no one can be relied on but Him the Allah Almighty. (Hasbun Allah wa NaimalWakeel)

Tafsir

The Surah is the clarification of Islamic faith in a very simple way.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١

This verse proclaims the oneness of Allah. The word “Ahad“ used only for Allah and for no one else. It means single or only one.

ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ٢

One of the names of Allah is “Samad“ the Eternal refuge, the self-sufficient the Absolute and the one on Whom all depends and all creatures turns to for fulfillment of their needs and aspirations.

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٣

Allah was not born, nor did He give birth. Therefore, He has no beginning no ending too! Allah is the Creator of each and everything and He was not Created by any power. This verse made it clear that Allah is one, the sustainer, He has no offsprings nor He was born.

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ ٤

This last verse of the Surah declares that Allah is beyond comparison. There is none in the entire Universe, nor ever was, nor ever can be, who is equal to Allah SWT. He is Unique in every aspect that’s why word “Ahad”means alone is used.

Virtues

1. Tirmidhi has recorded on the authority of Sayyidina Abu Hurairah RA that once the Messenger of Allah SAW asked the people to gather and said “I shall recite one third of the Quran” And messenger of Allah SAW recited Surah Ikhlaas. Subhan’Allah

2. Imam Ahmed RA has recorded a narration that a person came up to Messenger of Allah SAW and said “I love this Surah immensely, to which Prophet SAW replied, your love for it causes you to enter Jannah (Ibn kaseer).

Conclusion

This Surah is held by Prophet Mohammed SAW in a great esteem because it states the foremost and fundamental doctrine of Islam (Tawhid) in four simple sentences, thats why on several occasions and in different ways Prophet SAW told his ummah this Surah is equivalent to one third of Quran and recite it repeatedly in daily prayers.
